Fake Error Messages
Do be wary of fake error messages - creators of malicious software often use this
tactic to trick computer users into worrying that their computer is insecure, and
then installing their malicious software. Creators of software such as this often
use apparently helpful software to gain access to victims computers, so do be wary.
Two examples of a real, frequently used fake error messages are shown below - website
addresses contained in them have been removed:
"CRITICAL ERROR MESSAGE! - REGISTRY DAMAGED AND CORRUPTED. To FIX this problem:
Open Internet Explorer and type: www.CENSORED.com Once you load the web page, close
this message window After you install the cleaner program you will not receive any
more reminders or pop-ups like this. VISIT www.CENSORED.com IMMEDIATELY!"
"STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. Windows has found 55 Critical System
Errors. To fix the errors please do the following: 1. Download Registry Update from:
www.CENSORED.com 2. Install Registry Update 3. Run Registry Update 4. Reboot your
computer FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO SYSTEM FAILURE!"
The method used to send these messages to your computer is non-threatening, and
does not pose any threat to the security of information on your computer.
Genuine Windows error messages will never use scare tactics or over use capital
letters, and they will always use good grammar. A genuine error will not ask you
to visit a website and download software. If in doubt, do not click on the error
message, and perform both a virus scan and a spyware check of your computer.
