Dvorak Keyboard

The Dvorak keyboard is an alternative keyboard layout to this standard Qwerty layout that most of us are used to today.

Brief History of the Qwerty Keyboard

The vast majority of people today use Qwerty, not because it is the most suitable layout for typing speed and comfort, but beacause of the gradual transition from typewriters to computers. It was designed in the 1860's for the first ever typewriter, with popular letters arranged in small groups so the physical mechanics of the keyboard would continue to work correctly as a typists speed increased. Now that we don't need to worry about this, we  can move on to a keyboard layout specifically designed for speed and comfort.

Introducing the Dvorak Layout

UK Dvorak keyboard layout.

Above is shown the Dvorak UK keyboard layout, differing from the US version slightly - the pound sign is more prominent, and punctuation is moved slightly. Don't be scared off by how much the Dvorak layout differs from the Qwerty layout though - all but two of the common keys have moved - it is worth learning.

Practicality of using Dvorak

To use the Dvorak keyboard layout on your computer, you simply need to install a keyboard layout, such as you could to enable you to type in another language. Many are included with the Windows operating system.

On the surface it might seem like a bit of a problem that computers aren't sold with Dvorak keyboards, and so you won't be able to see the correct letters that you're typing. But, this is a blessing in disguise - in order to learn to type with Dvorak with a Qwerty keyboard, you'll need to cover up the keys, and this is the single best way to learn touch typing . Without being able to see the letters on each key, you won't be able to cheat and look down at your fingers. After some time, this'll gradually help you type proficiently without looking at the keyboard at all.

A number of popular writers use the Dvorak keyboard layout, or their own varients of it. It is known to help:

  • Increase typing speed
  • Reduce or eliminate pain from Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

A US version of the Dvorak keyboard is included with Windows, so for UK users we have provided a download below for the modified UK version. Simply download a file below and install it. You'll then be able to change your default keyboard to the Dvorak layout.

Programmer Dvorak

Anyone involved in computer programming may be interested to know that a modified version of the Dvorak keyboard layout has been developed, providing easier access to commonly used symbols. All letters are laid out in the same pattern as the standard Dvorak layout.
